this kinda reminds of a lot of Michael Gondrys' work

Whilst this looks like it would be hard to do I do see it to be any more difficult than breaking down the beat/notes in a video editor. The drum beat is most effective I think. He obviously has play a range of beats that he can pick from to set up a drum loop. Gondry does a similar thing.
